Review: Thompson Zihuatanejo

Boutique beach hotels sometimes rely heavily on marine-themed design cliches. But not Thompson Zihuatanejo. During my recent visit, I was struck by the property’s warm, sophisticated style — an enticing blend of upscale ambience and natural beauty. It’s an ideal vibe for a laid-back destination like Zihuatanejo.

Tucked along the coast at Playa La Ropa, one of the town’s prettiest beaches, this 56-room boutique property offers the perfect antidote for vacationers tired of sprawling resorts. There’s no need for golf carts or long hikes to get to dinner or the beach here, and I loved following the walkways that curve and meander past lush vegetation and small lagoons. Singing birds and the appearance of an occasional shy iguana added to the feeling that I was someplace special; even the thatch-roof accommodations seem designed specifically for the picture-perfect tropical setting.

The location on La Ropa beach is another selling point. It’s ideal for sunbathing, swimming and strolling — and there are a number of small shops on a side street just off the beach stocked with all the vacation basics (although the hotel’s on-site shop offers a decidedly more fashion-conscious place to browse).

The beach provided a memorable backdrop for some of my favorite moments at the hotel: sipping a cocktail while sinking into a beach chair, lounging by the adults-only pool just steps from the sand and joining in a mezcal tasting accompanied by flavorful small bites.

Explore the Menu

Speaking of bites, dining is another highlight at Thompson Zihuatanejo. I enjoyed several meals at Hao, the alfresco restaurant that serves three meals per day and offers a varied menu of Mexican and international dishes. For an even more elevated dining experience, Ceniza is the place to be, with a sophisticated menu and photo-worthy seating right on the beach.

Guests can also book unique culinary experiences, including chef-led cooking classes and a program called La Parota — an intimate “dinner in the wild” in a natural setting with dishes inspired by traditions from around Latin America.

Activities and Wellness

While I would’ve been perfectly content lying back under a shaded palapa for my entire visit, Thompson Zihuatanejo made it easy to stay engaged, with free activities such as beach Zumba, massage classes, kayaking, Spanish-language lessons and games like cornhole and Jenga. I also made good use of the 24-hour fitness center, a well-equipped facility housed in its own thatched-roof building.

And then there’s the spa, a compact-yet-beautiful venue that offers everything from 15-minute mango facials to a 150-minute, pre-Hispanic body ritual that includes a facial, massage and time in a temazcal, a traditional sweat lodge with roots in Indigenous culture. I emerged after my massage treatment feeling refreshed and ready to explore more of the property as well as the region — I enjoyed a daytime tour that included stops in downtown Zihuatanejo and the nearby town of Ixtapa. (Hotel staff are quite adept at finding activities and tours to match the interest of guests.)

Inside the Guestrooms

Accommodations at Thompson Zihuatanejo are as stylish as the public spaces. My Lagoon Suite was a 1,000-square-foot sanctuary complete with a sunken sitting area, a large desk and a private terrace with its own plunge pool. Travelers looking for another indulgent option might also want to consider the swim-up suites, which have private balconies that lead directly into the adults-only pool.

Though I traveled solo, it was easy to see how this property could be memorable for romance-minded couples. The boutique size, adults-only swimming pool, lovely small restaurants and casual, uncrowded setting make it appropriate for honeymooners and even destination weddings (complete buyouts are available for groups of up to 200).

Families, of course, can certainly appreciate the separate, all-ages pool and the variety of kid-friendly beach activities — as well as the ocean-view, two-bedroom Thompson Suite and Beach Suite, both of which measure 1,800 square feet.

As part of the World of Hyatt, Thompson Zihuatanejo is especially appealing for Hyatt loyalists, as well as fans of the Thompson brand’s thoughtful approach to relaxed luxury, with a design aesthetic that’s eye-catching without ever feeling forced. It’s also a worthwhile choice for anyone looking for a property that reflects the spirit of Zihuatanejo, with its tranquil setting that makes the most of the region’s natural attributes.
