Review: Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets

Digging into a plate of mouthwatering short rib tacos at Unik The Kitchen, the rooftop restaurant at Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets, I found myself pausing between bites to take in the view. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, I kept gazing at the rooftop infinity pool and chic open-air lounge. Beyond that, yachts dotted the turquoise waters, and in the distance, the Cancun Hotel Zone skyline shimmered like a mirage.

The sumptuous visuals made me feel a bit like I was in a movie — which is how I felt during most of my stay at this adults-only, all-inclusive resort.

This property is one of just two hotels carrying the Impression by Secrets brand, which is positioned as the most elevated, luxurious level of the Secrets Resorts & Spas concept (and is part of the Hyatt portfolio). The Isla Mujeres property is the only standalone Impression by Secrets property; the other, Impression Moxche by Secrets, exists as a dedicated enclave within the larger Secrets Moxche Playa del Carmen.

During my recent stay, I quickly discovered what makes this hospitality brand stand out.

Arrival as Part of the Experience

Arriving at Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets is part of the fun, and it sets the stage for a memorable experience. After landing at Cancun International Airport, I boarded a private luxury SUV transfer to a private dock in Playa Mujeres, where I joined a handful of other arrivals at an airy palapa-topped lounge that serves as a mainland reception area for hotel guests. There, I relaxed and sipped a drink while a staff member handled check-in.

From there, the journey continued aboard a sparkling white private catamaran. The approximately 45-minute ride was simultaneously relaxing and breathtaking, and included drinks served by the attentive crew. Just before reaching the dock, the captain paused so passengers could take photos with the hotel in the background. A row of smiling staff members waited on the private hotel dock and began waving as we headed toward it — prompting one of my fellow catamaran passengers to draw parallels with the arrival experience on HBO series “The White Lotus.” I had to agree, though only in the best possible sense.

A friendly bellhop escorted me along the dock toward the property.
“Welcome to paradise!” called out a guest who was bobbing on a float in the turquoise waters.

Yet another moment that would perfectly into a movie.

Style, Comfort and a View

My accommodations — a Signature Junior Suite King Ocean Front With Hot Tub — were as impressive as the name suggests. Decorated in soothing cream and tan tones, the room featured a sunken living area with a comfy sofa, a spacious shower with natural light and a large balcony with a hot tub overlooking the Caribbean Sea.

Among my other favorite in-room features: a well-stocked minibar and snack selection, a lighting system that allowed for both ambience and practicality, and conveniently placed outlets that made working (or charging multiple devices at once) easy.

Cuisine is another strong selling point for Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets. Each restaurant offers beautiful design and decor, as well as sophisticated menus. I grew especially fond of Unik, not only because of its rib-eye tacos and spectacular view, but also for its indulgent Sunday brunch. I savored a variety of Italian specialties at Spezia, delicious Mexican dishes at La Vista and a wonderfully indulgent dinner at Wildfire Grill, the upscale steakhouse, as well. Another noteworthy feature in the food and beverage category is the 24-hour Cacao bakery and coffee bar, where guests can stop by anytime for quick bites and desserts.

The rooftop venues also deserve special mention. There are multiple infinity pools (all with photo-worthy views), and guests are never more than a few steps from water. What I especially liked was that each space has its own personality. The small beach is picturesque and pristine, with calm, clear waters. Pools range from expansive to intimate, from social to tranquil; one of the smaller pools, which was nearly always in the shade, proved especially well-suited for my sun-sensitive skin.

Diverse Experiences

I was impressed — and delighted — by the diversity of activities and entertainment at the relatively small hotel. Among my favorite outings was a fun and informative guided e-bike tour of a small portion of Isla Mujeres. My knowledgeable guide, Abril, led our group to Punta Sur, the island’s southernmost point, as well as to a cemetery where she explained local traditions.

There’s lots to do on-site at the hotel, too. Several immersive experiences take place at The Temple, a soaring, open-air palapa structure that overlooks the sea. This oversize structure provided a dramatically scenic backdrop for several of my most memorable experiences: a sound healing session, an early morning yoga class and a full-moon ceremony that introduced me to rituals inspired by Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of the moon, fertility and healing.

Evening entertainment was also varied and engaging. I enjoyed a fire show and live salsa music at The Temple, as well as a lively karaoke night and tarot-card reading session at Isola Bar.

Overall, I found that Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets more than lived up to its upscale branding. From the arrival by private catamaran to the stylish design and high-quality dining and entertainment, this hotel is an ideal choice for travelers looking for a sophisticated grown-up getaway.
