Paddling back toward the lineup on a borrowed surfboard — with my heart pounding and a megawatt smile lighting up my face — the same clear thought kept running through my mind.
“Sometimes the ocean just gives you one.”
Surfing at a remote reef break off the southern coast of the Fijian island of Viti Levu, I was surrounded by a stunning shade of blue after having just ridden out of an overhead barrel — surfer slang for the hollow tube that can form under the lip of a breaking wave.
And while that ride had been terrifically thrilling, I found myself feeling like I hadn’t really done much to earn it. It felt more like Fiji had just decided to give me an extraordinarily generous offering.
Surfers who’ve been fortunate enough to ride waves in the warm, clean water over Fiji’s world-class reef breaks often describe the experience with words like “gift” or “blessing.” The destination is home, after all, to some of the planet’s best surfing. For example, Cloudbreak — a legendary wave roughly 40 minutes by boat from Nadi off Viti Levu’s west coast — will host the World Surf League’s (WSL) Championship Finals happening later this month.
Cloudbreak is one of Fiji’s most popular surfing spots.

Fiji Surf Co
Surfers staying at large resort properties near Nadi on Viti Levu who want to check out the world-renowned reef breaks off the island’s west coast should book a tour with Fiji Surf Co. (fijisurfco.com.fj) Operating since 1995, the provider offers group surf tours that individuals can join, as well as private trips.
During a visit to Fiji this past May, Fiji Surf Co picked me up at my Port Denarau resort, loaned me a surfboard and transported me on one of their boats to Cloudbreak, where I managed to ride a couple of thrillingly steep waves. I also surfed with the company in the spring of 2024, snagging a bunch of fun waves at two other well-known Fiji reef breaks — Restaurants and Namotu Lefts — not far from Cloudbreak.
Fiji Surf Co’s commissionable five- to six-hour group surf tours start at about $80.
Six Senses Fiji
Just a 15-minute boat ride from Cloudbreak, Six Senses Fiji on the island of Malolo is a wonderful spot for high-end surfing clients who may be traveling with a non-surfing partner or with family. The luxury resort features a top-notch wellness and spa program along with an array of kid-friendly activities and facilities to keep an assortment of non-surfers happy.

The property rebranded its Surf with Six Senses program in late 2024 and offers everything from beginner lessons to full-day private tours for advanced surfers keen on spending as much time in barrels as possible.
Headed by Dan Sinclair, a pro surfer and the resort’s surf manager, the Surf with Six Senses program has a collection of terrific surfboards guests can rent, and will even arrange a private photographer for folks looking to get shots of themselves on waves of a lifetime.
Sinclair loaned me a shortboard during my visit, and his team took me out to Namotu Lefts, where we had a blast riding more fun waves than I could count.
Waidroka Bay Resort
Surfers interested in Fiji waves with far fewer folks in the lineup may want to consider a stay at Waidroka Bay Resort, a surf and scuba dive-focused property on Viti Levu’s southern coast.
Waidroka Bay is great for surfers hoping to score world-class rides without breaking the bank and features commissionable five-night packages that include unlimited local surfing, accommodation and three meals per day.
I stayed for the first time at the property in the spring of 2024 and had fun riding so many fabulous waves that I made sure to book a longer stay this May. I’m already seriously thinking about more nights next year.
