In an Oct. 29 announcement, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo highlighted progress made by the State Department around visa and passport processing.
In 2024, a record-breaking 11.5 million visitor visas were issued, and wait times for those visas were down 60% compared to the “acute time of the pandemic,” according to Blinken. Similarly, an unprecedented 24.5 million passport books and cards were processed — 500,000 more than 2023. The secretaries also shared that an online passport renewal system debuted in September, with more than 1 million Americans taking advantage of it within weeks.
Our Analysis: Record-Breaking Traveler Numbers Means There's Plenty of Business to Go Around
Travel and tourism accounts for nearly 10 million American jobs and $2.3 trillion in economic activity, according to Raimondo, and to see the government prioritizing the sector is both heartening and inspiring. Travel advisors and their clients will surely benefit from the ongoing improvement of the aforementioned systems, and the rising number of passport applicants cements the idea that business is good, if not booming. Both veteran and new-to-the-industry advisors stand to succeed if they know and connect with their market well — as there are clearly more than enough travelers to go around.

What They're Saying: Collaboration Leads to Progress
"This is a moment of great collaboration," Raimondo said. "People are often saying: 'What is the government doing for me?' This is an example of the State Department working with the Commerce Department hand in glove, fixing something. Maybe it isn’t glamorous, but the work that our teams did is making a difference in the lives of Americans and improving our economy — by just making it easier, working through the plumbing and the red tape to get it out of the way, to streamline the visa and travel process."
